Plant competition model reveals how dispersal shapes ecosystems and species survival
A computer model was created to study how plants compete with each other. The model showed that how far plants spread out and how they interact with their neighbors can affect which species wins in a competition. If a plant can spread out easily, it can take over an area from a weaker competitor. But if competition is stronger between different species than within the same species, patches of land can end up with just one type of plant, even though they can coexist peacefully. Including space in the model changes how plants behave compared to models that don't consider space.
