New Study Reveals Best Time to Harvest Forages for Maximum Nutrition
The researchers studied different types of forages like alfalfa, bromegrass, orchardgrass, and timothy to see how much dry matter, digestible dry matter, and protein they produced during their growth. They found that all forages increased in dry matter yield until the early-seed stage, with differences in growth rates and final yields. Grasses stored 70% of their dry matter but 82% of their digestible dry matter at certain stages. Digestible dry matter yields increased slowly after early June. Grasses had lower crude protein content and yield compared to alfalfa. Varietal differences in yield were small except for orchardgrass. By the suggested harvest time, alfalfa had stored 87% of its maximum protein yield, while grasses had stored 96%.
