Species diversity declining over time due to ecological equivalence assumption.
Macroecology studies large groups of species in different areas and times to understand biodiversity. Neutral models predict that species diversity decreases over time in a group and that species composition changes among communities. Real species have lower migration rates than predicted by these models. To make models more realistic, we can consider competitive advantages among species and differences in environmental quality. Neutral models are useful for comparing actual patterns of species distribution and diversity.
