Polluted Lake Threatens Nearby Residents, Innovative Farming Practices Offer Hope
Nutrient pollution in Moses Lake, Washington, was studied to find ways to reduce it. Researchers looked at where the nutrients were coming from and tested different methods to control them. They found that using different irrigation systems in agriculture, like cablegation and center pivot, helped reduce nutrient input. Other effective strategies included using shallow ponds to trap nutrients, managing septic tanks better, controlling animal waste, and making improvements in the lake itself. Most local farmers are trying these control measures, and a prioritizing system is in place to fund and implement them.
