Revolutionary membrane technology turns brackish water into safe drinking water.
Researchers in Indonesia studied how to improve the treatment of brackish water in coastal areas to make it safe for drinking. They used a combination of Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane with an air lift system as a pretreatment before Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane. This method helped to stabilize the water flow, reduce membrane fouling, and produce high-quality drinking water. The UF-PS membrane system with RO membrane at low pressure successfully removed 96-98% of dissolved solids and 99-100% of color from the brackish water. This approach could be a cost-effective and efficient way to provide clean drinking water in Indonesia's coastal regions.
