Newly Discovered Cave Ant Species Challenges Traditional Views on Ant Habitats
A new ant species, Leptogenys khammouanensis, was discovered in caves in Laos. This ant has unique features like small eyes, light color, and long legs and antennae, similar to cave-dwelling creatures. Ants are more common in caves than previously thought, especially in guano deposits. However, this new ant species was found deep in a cave without guano, suggesting it is adapted to cave life. This discovery challenges the idea that ants are rare in caves and shows that some ants are specially adapted to living in dark, nutrient-poor environments.
