Disturbance-induced changes in plant communities alter abundance-occupancy relationships over time.
Abundance and occupancy of species in plant communities change over time after disturbance. A study in Prince Albert National Park, Canada, looked at how plant communities recovered after prescribed burning. They found that abundance relative to occupancy increased in grasslands in 1983 and 2010. In forests, abundance relative to occupancy decreased in 1983. Changes in soil resources and plant structure after burning influenced these patterns. The study suggests that succession after disturbance affects abundance-occupancy relationships in plant communities.
