Maize cover crop boosts shade-tolerant legume growth in local environment.
Planting perennial pasture legumes like Coronilla varia, Lotus corniculatus, and Medicago sativa in between maize rows spaced 900 mm apart can help them grow well in the local environment. Early planting of the legume and removing the maize crop early at the silage stage are beneficial for legume establishment. A cover crop density of 25,000 to 30,000 maize plants per hectare is suitable for this method. The trials conducted over two seasons suggest that this approach is promising for establishing shade-tolerant legumes in the south-eastern Transvaal region.
