Replacing inorganic fertilizers with pig manure could revolutionize agriculture energy efficiency.
The study looked at how much energy is needed to transport and apply liquid pig manure on fields in Manitoba, Canada. They compared two different systems for applying the manure and found that using pig manure is much more energy-efficient than using synthetic fertilizers like anhydrous ammonia or urea. Even though it takes a lot of energy to move the manure from storage to the fields, it costs much less in terms of energy to provide the same amount of nutrients compared to synthetic fertilizers. This shows that using pig manure instead of synthetic fertilizers could help make agriculture more energy-efficient.
