Sustainable Fishing Practices Could Revitalize Oceans and Coastal Communities
The article discusses how managing marine fisheries should consider both the impact of the ecosystem on the fish and the impact of fishing on the ecosystem. This comprehensive approach is called Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management (EBFM). Similar approaches with different names exist, such as Ecosystem Considerations (EC) or Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM). The key idea is that to sustainably use marine resources, we must take into account the entire marine ecosystem and not just one aspect. By applying this ecosystem approach, we can better protect the fish populations and keep the ecosystem healthy for future generations.
