Life on Mars: Uncovering Organic Compounds Could Redefine Our Universe
The ExoMars mission aims to find signs of life on Mars by looking for specific organic molecules. Scientists are selecting targets for antibody development to detect these molecules, which could come from meteorites, ancient life, current life, or contamination. They expect to learn more from the distribution of compounds rather than identifying single molecules. To find evidence of life, they will need to sample areas with minimal radiation and oxidation, either by drilling or using exposed surfaces. By analyzing samples from the Martian soil, they hope to find both current and ancient signs of life, but they may need to extract the molecules in stages to get the best results.
