New method detects methane in water at ultra-low concentrations.
Scientists used gas chromatography to detect methane in water. They created a simple system using a standard gas chromatograph with a flame ionization detector. This method can detect methane in water at concentrations as low as 0.02 mg/l. Any ethane present would show up as a separate peak. The detector used does not respond to other gases or contaminants in the water.
