New Activated Carbon from Reed Black Liquor Shows Promise for Water Purification.
Activated carbon with a large surface area was made from reed pulp black liquor. By heating it to 800°C, the carbon had a surface area of 1395 m2 g−1 and good pore volume. At higher temperatures, the pores widened too much, reducing the surface area. This carbon can effectively remove Cr (VI) from solutions.
