New Zealand beach nourishment project successfully prevents erosion and maintains stability.
A beach in Balaena Bay, New Zealand was nourished with gravel in 1982 and monitored until 1984. Despite being affected by wind waves causing erosion and aggradation, most of the new sediment stayed in place. The beach remained stable, with little change in volume and no significant loss of its components. Only a small amount of old beach material and biogenic sediment was incorporated into the new beach. The nourishment did not significantly impact neighboring beaches or offshore areas.
