IBM's SQL/DS Revolutionizes Database Management in 1982.
IBM developed SQL/DS, their first commercial relational database, in 1982. It was based on a prototype called System R, created in the 1970s. The decision to launch SQL/DS was driven by the need to support small to mid-sized mainframe environments. The Endicott Lab successfully commercialized the project in 1979, delivering SQL/DS two years later. This marked IBM's entry into the relational database market, beating the release of DB2 by over a year.
