The article discusses how to improve teaching in Statics by focusing on fundamental concepts and measuring student understanding. It introduces four concept clusters and skills for implementing them, highlighting common student errors related to these concepts. A test called Statics Concept Inventory with 27 multiple choice questions was developed to assess student ability without heavy math. The test covers key concepts like free body diagrams and equilibrium conditions. Analysis of the test results showed students' grasp of Statics concepts before and after a mechanical engineering course.
