Coastal erosion from abandoned river delta reshaping continental shelves dramatically.
Coastal erosion at the Old Huanghe delta in China has been a major source of sediment for the Yellow Sea and East China Sea since 1855. By analyzing historical data and recent surveys, researchers found that the seabed erosion has been ongoing, with sandbanks disappearing and sediment being deposited in various areas. The sediment supply from coastal erosion is much larger than that from the modern Huanghe River and the Changjiang River. This erosion process has been significant in shaping the underwater landscape and sediment distribution in the region over the past century.
