Boost Sugarcane Yields by Selecting Stalk Number in Younger Crops!
The study looked at how sugarcane traits in younger crops relate to traits in older crops, and how these traits are inherited. They found that cane and sucrose yield in older crops have the most potential for improvement, while stalk weight, diameter, and length have the least. Stalk number in younger crops is important for predicting cane yield in older crops. By selecting for stalk number in younger crops, older crop yields can be enhanced. The results suggest that second ratoon crop yields can be predicted by first ratoon crop yields, and the best way to improve second ratoon yields is by selecting traits in the second ratoon crop.
