Relaxing "excessiveness" criterion reveals higher prevalence of anxiety disorder in China.
The study looked at how many people in Hong Kong have generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) with or without excessive worry. They found that when the requirement for excessive worry was relaxed, more people were diagnosed with GAD. Both types of GAD had similar characteristics like symptoms, how long the worry lasted, and how it affected daily life. GAD without excessive worry was less common but still a real condition. The researchers suggest that future guidelines should consider how to best identify people who only have excessive worries perceived by others.
