New wind observations reveal potential 50% overestimation of wind speeds
This article looks at strong wind observations in the lower part of the atmosphere. The researchers compared actual wind data with predictions from models used in wind engineering. They found that under strong wind conditions, factors like thermal stability and terrain roughness can significantly affect wind speeds. The height of the surface layer where these effects are important is at least 150 meters. Wind speed estimates at locations without observation stations can be off by up to 50%.
