Vinyl wrapping extends okra freshness, prevents chilling damage during storage.
Vinyl wrapping small okra pods helps keep them fresh for longer during storage. When stored in the open air at cold temperatures, the pods dry out quickly and lose quality within a few days. Chilling damage can occur at 2°C after four days. Wrapping the pods in vinyl allows them to stay fresh for up to ten days at 2–10°C, but they deteriorate when moved to room temperature. The color and firmness of the pods decrease over time, and their respiration rate increases, indicating potential chilling damage before it becomes visible. Pods stored at 8–10°C are at risk of fungal growth, affecting their quality during shelf life. To keep small okra fresh, it's best to store them at 6°C.
