Satellite images and elevation data were used to study forests in a dry mountain region in central Asia. The researchers found that forests are mainly on north-facing slopes and are limited by low precipitation and temperature. Forests are found at different heights depending on the direction of the mountains. The potential forest area is much larger than the current forested area.
