Multinomial models used for psychological data with small sample sizes may not always give accurate results with standard methods. A simulation study was conducted to compare different estimation methods and goodness-of-fit statistics for these models. The study found that the best choices are not always the maximum likelihood estimation method and the log-likelihood ratio statistic.
