Coastal development in West Africa altered by sand barrier evolution.
A study looked at how a sand barrier complex along the coast of Ghana and Togo has changed over the past 5000 years. The barrier system, connected to the Volta Delta, has evolved from growing to stationary due to changes in sand transport and deposition. Factors like sediment supply, topography, and human activities have influenced these changes. The barrier progradation slowed down around 3400 years ago, leading to erosion in some areas. Recent human activities like dam construction and port development have further impacted the barrier system, causing differential erosion and progradation along the coast.
