Water weakens high-strength aluminum composite, impacting fatigue strength in society.
The researchers studied how adding SiC whiskers to a high-strength aluminum alloy affects its strength and fatigue resistance. They found that the composite had better mechanical properties than the alloy alone, and its fatigue strength in air was higher. However, when exposed to water, the composite's fatigue strength decreased at lower stress levels. Fatigue cracks in the composite started at whisker clusters or corrosion pits in water.
