Archaea discovered thriving in low-salt environments, challenging extremophile stereotype.
Archaea, a type of microorganism, were believed to only live in extreme environments. However, new research has found Archaea in more common places like water and soil. Scientists have successfully grown three new types of Archaea from sediment with salt levels similar to seawater. These Archaea can survive with less salt than previously known types and can even grow in conditions similar to seawater. This discovery shows that Archaea can live in more varied environments than we thought, including coastal salt marshes.
