Weak math skills hamper students' statistical performance, study reveals
The study looked at how students' math skills and reasoning abilities affect their performance in statistics. They tested 145 Diploma Science students and found that prior math knowledge has a moderate impact on their statistics performance, while statistical reasoning has little effect. Overall, math knowledge and reasoning explained 37.2% of the variation in performance. Surprisingly, there was a moderate relationship between math knowledge and reasoning, but no correlation between performance and reasoning.
