New Study Reveals Impact of Low-Density Housing on Phosphorus Pollution
Low-density residential areas near forests can increase phosphorus runoff into water sources. A study compared phosphorus levels in stormwater from a residential area and a forest during storms. The residential area had higher phosphorus levels and runoff compared to the forest. In 1983, the phosphorus export from the residential area was over three times higher than in 1982. This shows that low-density residential development can significantly impact phosphorus levels in waterways.
