Juvenile abalone were raised in a controlled environment and fed different diets to see how they grew. The best growth was seen in abalone between 3 and 6 mm when they were fed diatoms, but other diets like macroalgae and artificial food also worked well. It was found that abalone should switch from microalgae to macroalgae when they reach 7 mm in size. After 13 and 12 months, two groups of abalone raised in a special tank system grew to be around 15.9 mm and 17.5 mm long. Ways to help young abalone grow faster were discussed.
