Unique Bacteria Found in Polluted Harbor Sediments, Signaling Environmental Impact.
Bacteria in polluted harbor sediments play a big role in dealing with pollutants. Researchers studied bacterial diversity in Victoria Harbor sediments using four clone libraries of 16S rDNA. They found 178 different types of bacteria in the sediments, with each site having its own unique bacterial community. The dominant bacteria were γ- and δ-proteobacteria, holophaga/acidobacteria, and planctomycetales. Other major bacteria included ε-proteobacteria, firmicutes, aminobacterium, holophaga/acidobacteria, and bacteroidetes. Some bacteria were only found in Victoria Harbor sediments, showing that the bacteria there are diverse and unique.
