New study reveals alfalfa as top choice for high-protein forage!
Improved forage harvesting techniques are needed to reduce losses during field drying of alfalfa, red clover, and birdsfoot trefoil. A study evaluated mechanical dewatering of these forages at different maturity stages. Pressing increased dry matter concentration, with alfalfa having the highest concentration. Pressing removed 45% of fresh weight and 20% of dry matter from alfalfa. Protein concentrate contained more nutrients from alfalfa compared to red clover and birdsfoot trefoil. Different species and maturity levels showed varying responses to mechanical dewatering based on dry matter and fiber concentrations in the forage.
