Seed treatment boosts germination for mine-site restoration, revolutionizing seed storage efficiency.
Seeds from various plant species were stored for 36 months to see how dormancy affects germination. By treating seeds to break dormancy before storage, they stayed non-dormant and germinated well after storage. Seeds that were dormant before storage could still be made to germinate after storage by treating them. The method of storage (temperature and humidity) did not affect germination. Storing seeds in a non-dormant state does not change their ability to germinate, which is good for restoration projects as it reduces handling and improves seed use efficiency.
