Irrigation in Australia accelerates groundwater rise, threatens water-table levels.
Groundwater recharge in the Campaspe River Basin was studied to help manage salinity and high water-tables. An integrated model was used to estimate recharge rates, showing that 15% of irrigation water recharges the aquifer. Rainfall contributes 6% in irrigated areas and 4-5% in dryland areas. Water-table levels in irrigated areas are rising at 0.14 m yr-1, faster than irrigation increases.
