New study reveals optimal timing for weed suppression in soybean fields.
The researchers studied how different methods of managing weeds in soybean fields affect weed growth. They tested two weed management systems, different planting and termination times for cereal rye cover crops, and supplemental weed control methods. They found that using herbicide in conventional systems was more effective than high-residue cultivation in herbicide-free systems. Planting soybeans at the same time resulted in less weed growth in conventional systems, while herbicide-free systems had more weeds, especially common ragweed. Early management reduced weed growth in herbicide-free systems but increased it in conventional systems. Controlling weeds before planting soybeans is crucial for effective weed suppression with cereal rye cover crops.
