Far-red light damages photosystems, impacting plant health and oxygen production.
The researchers studied how shining far-red light on spinach leaves damages photosystem I and II. They found that active oxygen produced by photosystem I harms both photosystems, with photosystem II being more affected. This damage is caused by superoxide and hydrogen peroxide. In destacked thylakoids, where photosystems are closer together, photosystem II is better protected from damage compared to stacked thylakoids.
