A new method was developed to measure proteins in membranes using a dye called Bradford assay with special detergents. These detergents help to dissolve membrane-bound proteins without causing interference. The detergent hexyl-β-d-glucopyranoside worked best, allowing accurate protein measurements. The presence of this detergent did not affect the accuracy of the protein measurements. The results from this new method matched well with other protein measurement techniques. This new procedure is quick and easy to use, making it a convenient option for scientists working with membrane-bound proteins.
