Newly discovered free radical in spinach chloroplasts could revolutionize solar energy.
A new free radical signal was discovered in spinach chloroplasts when illuminated at 77°K with specific light. This signal only appears when an oxidant is present before illumination. The signal is linked to the primary reaction of Photosystem II, not Photosystem I, based on its presence in Photosystem II-enriched fragments. The signal's characteristics suggest it may be related to the reaction-center chlorophyll of Photosystem II.
