Sod-seeding legumes triples herbage production in tall fescue swards.
Sod-seeding forage legumes in tall fescue fields can boost herbage production. In southern Illinois, five legume species were successfully established in tall fescue using specific planting equipment. Alfalfa was the most productive and long-lasting, while red clover and ladino clover were good for short-term growth. Different chemicals effectively suppressed tall fescue growth to allow legume establishment. Overall, introducing legumes increased dry matter yields in tall fescue fields, with some legumes persisting for multiple growing seasons.
