This paper discusses different methods for testing how easily water flows through compacted clay soils. Nine methods are reviewed, each with its own advantages. Some methods are good for measuring both vertical and horizontal flow, while others provide data quickly but only for a small amount of soil. The sealed double-ring infiltrometer and pan lysimeter are the most versatile for testing large volumes of soil.
