Stratified lake study reveals surprising origins of smelly sulfur compounds.
The researchers studied volatile organic sulfur compounds in a lake to understand how they are made. They found that these compounds are mainly formed from certain types of sulfur and carbon molecules in the water. The compounds are quickly made and used up, keeping their levels low in the lake. Unlike in the ocean, where plankton make a sulfur compound called DMSP, this lake has a different way of making sulfur compounds.
