Climate change threatens food security in India, impacting millions of livelihoods.
Climate change is affecting food grain productivity in India, which could threaten food security. A study analyzed the impact of climate and non-climatic factors on crops like rice, wheat, and maize. Results show that rising temperatures negatively affect rice, maize, sorghum, and ragi crops. Excessive rain and changing rainfall patterns also decrease productivity of barley, rice, maize, and ragi crops. The study suggests that different crops need separate policies to cope with climate change, and emphasizes the importance of irrigation and proper fertilizer use. Adequate pricing for farmers' products during harvest season is also crucial.
