Sprinkler irrigation in Spain wastes 24% of water, but a new schedule could boost efficiency by 7%.
In a study about water management in a Spanish sprinkler irrigation area, researchers looked at how water was used and the quality of irrigation in the region during 2009 and 2010. They found that the district had higher water usage compared to nearby areas, with an average irrigation efficiency of 76%. The study identified issues such as low efficiency for corn and water deficits for alfalfa, pointing out that some farmers were not adjusting irrigation to suit different crop needs. By simulating a new irrigation schedule, the researchers suggested that improvements could be made, potentially increasing irrigation efficiency to 83%, eliminating water deficits, and reducing drainage. Overall, the study recommends changes in irrigation practices to make better use of water resources and improve crop yields.
