Developing Nations Struggle to Earn Carbon Credits, Limiting Climate Action
The study looked at how well ASEAN countries are doing in Clean Development Mechanism projects. They analyzed 254 projects registered with the UNFCCC as of October 15, 2010. Only 20% of these projects received carbon emission rights, totaling 6.5 million tons, which is only 15% of what was planned. Challenges for ASEAN countries include delays between project registration and approval, discrepancies in planned and approved emission amounts, and high transaction costs for small projects. This shows that while ASEAN countries are partnering with developed nations in CDM projects, actual carbon emission reductions may be limited. More support and cooperation from developed countries are needed for successful CDM management in ASEAN countries.
