Obesity-linked kidney disease could be driven by growth factor imbalance
Obese Zucker rats have enlarged kidneys due to early mesangial proliferation. The mRNA levels of IGF-I and GHR in the kidney and liver of obese rats are lower than in lean rats. However, the mRNA levels of IGF-1R in the kidney of obese rats are higher, suggesting increased IGF-1 binding leading to kidney hypertrophy.
