Legume Residue Incorporation Reduces Bean Productivity on Kenyan Smallholder Farms
Intercropping beans with legume residues did not increase productivity on small farms in Kenya. The study compared different fertilization strategies and found that beans with legume residues had lower yields and more pest problems. Beans with diammonium phosphate (DAP) and farmyard manure (FYM) had the highest yields. Legume residues may immobilize nutrients, leading to poor bean growth. Early incorporation of residues and using more available fertilizer at planting could help farmers improve bean yields.
