Titanium levels in mosses reveal surprising environmental impact on peat bogs.
The scientists studied titanium levels in different types of moss from peat bogs in Germany and Belgium. They collected moss samples from various areas within the bogs over two years and found that titanium concentrations varied a lot, even within the same species. They also discovered that more productive moss species could accumulate more titanium. The researchers suggest that titanium particles may be carried by water and build up in the moss over time. To understand the differences in moss chemistry, they recommend studying moss samples of the same age and exposure time to atmospheric deposits.
