New steppe vegetation association discovered in relict mountain region.
A new type of grassland vegetation called Bromo Moesiacae-Stipetum Epilosae has been discovered in the Bosnek karst region of Mt Vitosha in South-Western Bulgaria. This vegetation grows on dry, shallow soils on steep slopes with a southern or south-western exposure. It contains many unique plant species specific to the region, as well as Mediterranean species. The researchers compared this new vegetation with similar ones in other karst mountains in Bulgaria and Serbia, drawing conclusions about the origins of the steppe vegetation in the area.
