The study looked at how different sugars and sugar mixtures affect dental plaque. Dental students were split into groups and consumed various sugars in their diet. Xylitol-based sugars reduced plaque formation the most. A mix of fructose and xylitol was better than fructose and sorbitol. The diet changes had a big impact on plaque formation but not on its chemical makeup.
