Wetland Restoration Efforts Failing to Replicate Natural Conditions, Risking Ecosystem Imbalance
The study compared natural and man-made floodplain wetlands in Pennsylvania to see how they differ in terms of water levels. The researchers found that the created wetlands were generally wetter and had more open water compared to the natural wetlands. The natural wetlands had deeper water levels, shorter periods of saturation, and less time with water in the root zone. This suggests that some man-made wetlands may be too flooded compared to natural wetlands, which are often just saturated or drier.
