Tabloidization fuels use of click bait headlines in online news journalism.
Online news headlines often use forward-referencing to grab readers' attention. A study of 100,000 headlines from Danish news websites found that this technique is used to create anticipation and curiosity, encouraging readers to click on the headline. The research shows that commercialization and tabloidization contribute to the frequent use of forward-referencing in online news headlines. Additionally, the study expands on previous models of reference theory to include references in different forms on the web.
